Noche de paz, noche de amor,
Todo duerme en derredor.
Entre sus astros que esparcen su luz
Bella anunciando al niñito Jesús
Brilla la estrella de paz
Brilla la estrella de paz

Noche de paz, noche de amor,
Todo duerme en derredor
Sólo velan en la oscuridad
Los pastores que en el campo están ;
Y la estrella de Belén
Y la estrella de Belén

Noche de paz, noche de amor,
Todo duerme en derredor
sobre el santo niño Jesús
Una estrella esparce su luz,
Brilla sobre el Rey
Brilla sobre el Rey

Stille Nacht (Christmas Bonus)

"Silent Night" in the original German.
Lyrics by Joseph Mohr and melody by Franz X. Gruber
First performed on Christmas eve 1818 at the St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf, Austria.

Many versions at http://silentnight.web.za/
Lyrics copied here from http://www.lexilogos.com/chant_stille_nacht.htm

Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht!
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute heilige Paar
Holder Knabe im lockigten Haar
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!

Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'
Jesus in deiner Geburt!
Jesus in deiner Geburt!

Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht!
Die der Welt Heil gebracht
Aus des Himmels goldenen Höhn
Uns der Gnaden Fülle läßt sehn
Jesum in Menschengestalt!
Jesum in Menschengestalt!

Let It Be Me

Happy New Year!
I'm back from China, where I was for 8 days. That's why this video and the others to come after it are 8 days late. As usual, I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do. Daily videos are hard (waah waah, I know).

Comments are welcome as always, and I've even got a request or two to fulfil in the next (few?) days. A few leftover Christmas songs to come as well.

Jolly old Santa will leave
Not a peep little doll, go to sleep, little doll, while I
Sing you a lullaby for Christmas eve

Go to sleep, little doll, pleasant dreams
You'll awake Christmas day in a room full of gaily wrapped
Presents to give and receive
So to bed, little one, nod your head, little one, while I
Sing you a lullaby for Christmas eve

Coventry Carol with Lizzie

This is a double now, but it's one Lizzie and I recorded in Maine this past August and that I've been saving for Christmas. So, Merry Christmas from Maine in August!

Words by Robert Croo; melody from a 1591 manuscript (I would love to see that manuscript, man.)

Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child
By by, lully, lullay
Lullay thou little tiny child

For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing
By by, lully, lullay

Chargèd he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All children young to slay

Then woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and say
For thy parting nor say nor sing

Ma'oz Tzur

A song for Hanukkah, late in coming, I know. From Rise Up Singing in the chapter Faith, p.45
Authorship: Rise Up Singing says the first English verse is traditional, and the second by Sam Hinton.
Wikipedia says that both, and a third I didn't sing but I'll copy below, are by Marcus Jastrow and Gustav Gottheil.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma%27oz_Tzur
More information and a free streaming clip of the song:

http://www.chabad.org/multimedia/media_cdo/aid/104615/jewish/Maoz-Tzur.htm

Chords (as in video):
D DG DA D / DG A DA D ://
D G D - / Bm G D A / D - A - / D G D A / D - A - / D G A D

or (as in R.U.S.):
D DG DA D / DG A DA D ://
D G D - / Bm G A - / D - A - / D G A - / D - A - / D G A D

Rock of Ages let our song / Praise thy saving power
Thou amidst the raging foes / Wast our sheltering tower
Furious they assailed us / But Thine arm availed us
And Thy word broke their sword / When our own strength failed us
And Thy word broke their sword / When our own strength failed us

Children of the martyr race / Whether free or fettered
Wake the echoes of the songs / Where ye may be scattered
Yours the message cheering / That the time is nearing
Which will see all men free / Tyrants disappearing
Which will see all men free / Tyrants disappearing

Kindling new the holy lamps / Priests approved in suffering
Purified the nation's shrine / Brought to God their offering
And His courts surrounding / Hear in joy abounding,
Happy throngs, singing songs / With a mighty sounding
Happy throngs, singing songs / With a mighty sounding

Hebrew 1st verse (transliteration from Wikipedia):
Ma'oz Tzur Yeshu'ati, lekha na'eh leshabe'ah
Tikon beit tefilati, vesham toda nezabe'ah
Le'et takhin matbe'ah mitzar hamnabe'ah
Az egmor beshir mizmor hanukat hamizbe'ah

Meaning (from Chabad.org):
O mighty stronghold of my salvation, to praise You is a delight
Restore my House of Prayer and there we will bring a thanksgiving offering
When You will have prepared the slaughter for the blaspheming foe
Then I shall complete with a song of hymn the dedication of the Altar

Verses 2-5:

Joy to the World (Christmas Bonus)

The BTS is Bangkok's lovely, efficient elevated train. In 2009 one of its 2 lines got extended to cross to 2 stations on the other side of the river, but it's 2010 now and I'm still waiting for them to start service out past On Nut. This won't mean much to you if you've never visited. Here, I'm recording on the skywalk justoutside the Ploen Chit Station. Merry Christmas!

Joy to the world, the Lord has come
Let earth receive her king

Up On The Rooftop (Christmas Bonus)

To set the record straight: neither "104 Giant Christmas Songs" NOR Raffi use "rooftop". They both use house-top. My false Raffi lyrics obviously sprung from my own long-term misremembering (and Megan's too, apparently).

(I still like "rooftop".)

Why, Oh Why? (Woody Guthrie)

By Woody Guthrie
Rise Up Singing chapter: Home and Family, p.113

D - G D / G D A D
or transposed to A (the R.U.S. key):
A - D A / D A E A

Why, oh why, oh why-oh? Why, oh why, oh why?
Because, because, because, because, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Why can't a dish break a hammer? Why, oh why, oh why?
Because a hammer's a hardhead - goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

Why can't a bird eat an elephant? Why, oh why, oh why?
Because an elephant's got pretty hard skin - goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Why can't a mouse eat a streetcar? Why...
Because a mouse's stomach ain't big enough to fit no streetcar - goodbye...

Why does a horn make music?
Because the horn-blower blows it...

Why does the landlord take money?
I don't know that one myself...

Why can't a rabbit chase an eagle?
Because the last rabbit that decided he'd go out and chase an eagle, well it didn't turn out so good, that's why a rabit can't chase an eagle, and that's all I know about rabbits and eagles...

Why don't you answer my questions?
Because I don't know the answers...

Isn't She Lovely?

(Song begins at 3:13)
By Stevie Wonder
Rise Up Singing chapter: Home and Family, p.109
Chords:
Bm7 E9 A11 D / Bm7 E9 A11 D / Gmaj7 F# Bm7 E9 / A11 - D -

See the video for how to play these weird chords. I swear they're not difficult, just uncommon.

Isn't she lovely? Isn't she wonderful?
Isn't she precious? Less than one minute old
I never thought through love we'd be
Making one as lovely as she
But isn't she lovely made from love?

The Water is Wide (Waly Waly)

The song starts really far in, at 3:54 (so skip to it for the music).
I spend a lot of time at the beginning talking about Nobody Waved Goodbye, the Canadian movie from which I learned this song. Later on, I heard James Taylor do a version of it on his New Moonshine album, I think, but I still like the Nobody Waved Goodbye version better.

Rise Up Singing chapter: Ballads and Old Songs, p.15
My chords:
D G D - / Bm Em A - / D G Bm G / D A D -
R.U.S. chords:
D G A - / Bm Em A - / D G Bm G / A - D -

The water is wide, I can't cross o'er
Neither have I wings to fly
Build me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my true love and I

There is a ship and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not how I sink or swim

I leaned my back against some young oak
Thinking it was a sturdy young tree
But first it bended and then it broke
Thus did my love prove false to me

I thrust my hand into some soft bush
Thinking the fairest flower to find
But pricked my finger unto the bone
And left the fairest flower behind

O, love is handsome and love is fine
As the fairest flower when first it's new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew

O waly waly up the bank
And waly waly down the braes
And waly waly by yon burn side
Where me and my love were wont to gae

When sea and sand turneth far inland
And mussels grow on every tree
When cockle shells turn silver bells
Then would I love my love for thee

Mary Hamilton

From the Child ballads (Child ballad #173)
Rise Up Singing chapter: Ballads and Old Songs, p.13
For lyrics and some good historical information on this ballad, go here: http://www.contemplator.com/scotland/4marys.html

D - G D / - - A - / G A D Bm / D A D -
1. Word is to the kitchen gone
2. And word is to the hall
3. And word is up to Madam the Queen
4. And that's the worst of all
5. That Mary Hamilton's born a babe
6. To the highest Stuart of all [chords to lines 5&6 as for lines 3&4]

"Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton
Arise and tell to me
What thou hast done with thy wee babe
I saw and heard weep by thee?"

"I put him in a tiny boat
And cast him out to sea
That he might sink or he might swim
But he'd never come back to me"

"Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton
Arise and come with me
There is a wedding in Glasgow town
This night we'll go and see"

She put not on her robes of black
Nor her robes of brown
But she put on robes of white
To ride into Glasgow town

And as she rode into Glasgow town
The city for to see
The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife
Cried, "Ach, and alas for thee"

"Ah you need not weep for me" she cried
"You need not weep for me
For had I not slain my own wee babe
This death I would not dee"

"Ah, little did my mother think
When first she cradled me,
The lands I was to travel in
And the death I was to dee" [I forgot to sing this verse]

"Last night I washed the Queen's feet
And put the gold in her hair
And the only reward I find for this
The gallows to be my share"

"Cast off, cast off my gown" she cried
"But let my petticoat be
And tie a napkin 'round my face
For the gallows I would not see"

Then by and come the King himself
And looked up with a pitiful eye [pronounced "ee"]
"Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton
Tonight you'll dine with me"

"Ah, hold your tongue, my sovereign liege
And let your folly be
For if you'd a mind to save my life
You'd never have shamed me here"

"Last night there were four Marys
Tonight there'll be but three
There was Mary Beaton, and Mary Seaton
And Mary Carmichael, and me"

This World is not my Home

Take My Hand, Precious Lord

By Thomas A. Dorsey, "the father of Black gospel music" according to American Folklore: an encyclopedia, who remarked of himself, "I've been thrown out of some of the best churches in America"
Biographies of Dorsey, A.K.A. Georgia Tom: short, medium, long

Rise Up Singing chapter: Gospel, p.95
D D7 G - / D - A7 - / D D7 G - / D A7 D -

Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home

When my way goes drear, precious Lord, linger near
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home

When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home

A.K.A. Precious Lord, Take My Hand

Oh, Mary Don't You Weep

(Song begins at 2:10, chord review at 2:23)
Rise Up Singing chapter: Freedom, p.63

Chords: D A / - D / G D / DA D ://

If I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood
Pharaoh's army got drownded
Oh, Mary don't you weep

Chorus:
Oh, Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Oh, Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army got drownded
Oh, Mary don't you weep

Moses stood on the Red sea shore / Smotin' the water with a two by four...
(or "Moses stood on the Red sea shore / Smiting the water with a two by four...")
The Lord told Moses what to do / To lead those Hebrew children through...
God gave Noah the rainbow sign / No more water but fire next time...
Mary wore three links of chain / And every link was Jesus' name...
When I get to heaven, gonna sing and shout / Nobody up there to put me out...
One of these mornings, it won't be long / You're gonna call my name, but I'll be gone...
One of these days about twelve o'clock / This old world is gonna reel and rock...
One of these days in the middle of the night / People gonna rise and set things right...

Put Your Hand in the Hand

Rise Up Singing chapter: Gospel

D - A - / - - D - / D D7 G E / DBm EA DG D (as far as I can remember...)
"Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the waters
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea..."

Which reminds me, one of my very own brothers wrote a song with lyrics cribbed from the Bible that goes "He maketh the storm calm so that the waves thereof are still
He maketh the storm calm so that the waves thereof are still
He maketh the storm calm so that the waves thereof are still
He maketh the storm calm so that the waves thereof are stillllllllll"

It's quite repetitive, as you can see, but I think it's really good too. Worth a listen. I'll see if I can find a link to a performance of it online. I think there's one somewhere.
